Doc Martin - Regionalism

Notes:
Camera:
- camera shot looks up to Doc and down to the others. - showing the higher class and more intelligence of the region Doc is from and looking down showing the lack of knowledge and the way Doc looks down on them

Answer:
The use of the camera shows regionalism throughout this clip of Doc Martin. Firstly, throughout the clip when narrative is shown the camera shot looks up to Doc Martin and down on the other people, who are all from this region. This shows how the regionalism of Doc Martin is of a higher class and more intelligence then the region he has gone to as the camera looks down on them showing a lack of intelligence of the people from that specific region.

The use of sound shows regionalism throughout the clip of Doc Martin. One way this is shown is firstly the narrative shows this as the older man from this region uses basic words and doesn't over complicate what he is saying which also shows the region is of lower intelligence and lower class as higher education was minimal and they went straight into work. However, this is subverted as the mans son who also work with him uses intellectual, intelligent works when quoted 'literary reference' for then his father to question what he is saying. This goes against the stereotype of this region as it can be seen for him to be highly intelligent compared to the other characters in this clip from the same region.

The use of mise en scene shows regionalism throughout this clip. One reason it shows this is the costume of the characters. Doc Martin is dressed in a smart suit whereas the other people are dressed in dirty, worn work clothes. This shows regionalism as Doc Martin has a high class, important job so therefore has to look smart which shows what most people from the region he is from dress and that they mostly have important roles/jobs. This goes against the others as they can be seen to have working class jobs where not alot of knowledge and intelligence is needed showing the lower/working class of the region it is set and where they are from.
Another way this can be

Babylon - Ethnicity

Mise en Scene:
The policemen are wearing uniform and this shows their authority straight away, they are all white which could show that white people are potentially seen as more important. The black and Asian people are all wearing ordinary cleaner clothes to show that they are represented as being poor and not intelligent so they have poorly paid jobs.
The lighting is bright at first and then it goes dark when being filmed in the small room, this could show that they aren't equal, the room is a store room which again shows that they aren't worth nearly as much as the other people in the building.
The white lady and the Chinese lady are quite high up, this shows they are in charge of the immigrants.
Only the high up people are wearing makeup, this again shows that the immigrants are not equal to the rest of the people.
The props used are: the hoover and the kitchen these show that they only do low down jobs.
The room where the immigrants hide is like a small and cramped cupboard this shows that they aren't cared about by their bosses and don't have a specific room where they can hide.

Merlin - Class & Status

Merlin:
Sound:
there is Non diegetic music in this clip. This shows Merlin is somewhere he shouldn't be and can't be there and cannot be seen in such a place. This is showing class as in the class system the higher class look down on the others and classes are divided and people from a certain class can only be at a certain place which Merlin is not.
Diegetic rusting of paper as it shows he is rushing to get out the place and looking for something quickly as he shouldnt be in that place.
Merlin in the clip refers to the upper class as lord. Even though this is said in a sarcastic way, it shows the power that the lower class does not have. The word lord is referring to him as better than himself, and as if he is special.
Animals sounds in the market show working class poeple working with animals and dirt outside showing upper class poeple would not be put in that situation and stay away from any dirt or animals.

Torchwood - Sexuality

Sexuality

Camera - pan across when he is walking towards the other guy showing they are attracted to each other showing homosexual can be in love with the same sex exactly the same as straight people attracted to the opposite gender.
Close up of the kiss shows that the two men are attracted to each other and shouldn't be seen as something odd or different.

The close up shot of the two men kissing shows the attention that this act is receiving  and how people may see their sexuality as not normal. The audience is forced to watch the two men kiss this means that the audience can't look away and they can't just ignore it. If the people kissing were a heterosexual couple then we would see the whole scene and the close up, but the two men as this time seen kissing would not be normal but doing this close up is showing the audience the message that is trying to be put across is that it can't be ignored and that people should just face it and accept that love is love no matter who it is with and just because you may not see it as right or normal it doesn't mean it doesn't happen. No matter what view you have love cant be stopped so showing it to the audience shows the realness.

Coming down the mountain - Disability

Coming down the mountain

Camera
- birds eye view, first shot, to show the rooms structure and their split personalities
- low angles shot when he's about to leave him, to show he's more immature and unworthy
- 180 pan, a tracking shot, the second shot of him on his bed, shows his brain thinking and moving from point to point
- zoom on the boy in bed, to show his purity and how innocent his intentions are
- close up on the bus, changes stress him out and the close shot shows how stressed he is and how he is struggling with the journey home.

Mise en Scene
- dull lighting, shows sad life not happy.
-teenagers, not reliable leaves the boy on his own and potentially puts him in danger and goes off with his friend to a party.
-no makeup represents innocence.
- half and half sides of the bedroom, disabled boys side is very bright and colourful which shows that he is happy and content with his life where as his brothers side is quite dull and dark which shows he is not happy because he has t look after his brother all the time.
- at the bus stop the disabled boy is playing with his slinky toy which shows he has a child's mind we know this because his brother who isn't disabled is not playing with any toys.
-facial expressions- people looking at the disabled boy funny.
- disabled boy isn't really too bothered about what he is wearing.

Editing
- There are the two main characters who get the most screen time because its about their lives.
- The more able boy has the most screen time to show his point of view.
- The disabled boy doesn't get to show how he sees things. Typically he doesn't get a say in what happens.
- Fade from one shot to the other, it is smooth and flows. Shows how the day gradually goes on.
- The more able character is very opinionated and doesn't need attention and caring like the other character.
- Pace is slow with the disabled boy in the scene as people with learning difficulties are slow and cannot think for themselves and have to have 24/7.

Sound
-In the kitchen scene the disabled boy doesn't think before he speaks. He says 'I need a poo'. this tells us that he is vulnerable an hasn't matured as a teenager.
- Also in the kitchen scene their parents talk calmly and soft towards the boy with down syndrome. --- Whereas their parents talk harshly and snap at the other brother. This shows how disabled and abled people are treated differently.
- The voiceover and the music are contrapuntal. The dialogue in the voiceover explains how
annoyed the able body boy is with his disabled brother but the music is calm and soft.
- During the conversations in the kitchen the abled boy talks a lot more than the disabled boy this tells us that in the real world disabled people don't really have a say in what goes on in society.
- The diegetic sound of the cutlery clanging against each other and the chairs scraping along the floor brings us back to the reality of them being a normal family.

through editing the representation of disabled people can be seen, firstly, through the pace of the clip. This is as while the

Disability is represented throughout this clip of coming down the mountain. It is represented through camera, Mise en scene, Editing and Sound. Firstly, through camera the first shot is a birdseye view of the two brothers bedroom. this is too show the rooms structure and their split personalities as the two sides of the shared bedroom are high in contrast so this particular shot can reveal the whole bedroom and show the structure of the bedroom clearly. This is shown to represent disability as the disabled brother's half of the bedroom is bright and bold to show his immaturity and the way he has not grown up and shows his true age which is a representation of people suffering from learning difficulties such as down syndrome. where as in contrast to the able brother his room is basic to show his true age and maturity as a teenager growing into a young adult.

Another camera shot is the zoom on the disabled boys face when he's in bed. This represents disability as it shows his purity and how innocent his intentions are as learning difficulties show the slow development of people so it shows how inside he is still innocent and clueless like a young child meaning he needs care all the time.
